Where do Toby's rates come from?
Each rate, threshold and due date Toby uses sits in a rate table we hold. Each row records the page it came from and the dates it applies between. Before a table is used, our Compliance Lead checks every row against that page. If a publisher changes a rate, the table is updated and checked again before Toby uses it.
How does Toby work out a figure?
Toby takes your figures and the rate table for the right date, and works out the answer with ordinary arithmetic. The same question with the same figures gives the same answer every time. AI is used to read your question and to explain the result in plain words. It never sees your tax file numbers, bank details or names.
How is Toby tested?
Revenue NSW and the State Revenue Office Victoria print worked payroll tax examples. Toby must reproduce each one exactly, and any change that breaks one is stopped before it reaches you. A further set of checked cases across GST, PAYG withholding, super, fringe benefits tax, termination pay and payroll tax runs on every change to a calculation.
How do I see where an answer comes from?
An answer gives the figure, the working, the section or page it relies on, and the date of the law it applies. You can open the source and check it yourself.
What happens when Toby doesn't know?
If a question needs a rate or a part of the law we don't hold, Toby tells you rather than guessing. It also tells you when it can't place a document in time.
